Family Record Book

CONDITION ON RECEIPT:  The record book was bound in a four-hole, stab-sewn Chinese binding with brown, two-layer paper covers. The sewing was intact. The covers extended beyond the fore-edge of the textblock and were flush with the textblock at head and tail. The covers were dirty and had creases, tears and small losses. The textblock consisted of 114 leaves folded at the fore-edge and single unfolded flyleaves at front and back. The leaves were made of laid paper printed with black ink. The printing extended around the fore-edge of each leaf. The paper was bright and flexible, but dirty around the edges. Several leaves at the front and back including the flyleaves were particularly dirty and were creased and had tears and small losses. Some of the small losses appeared to be insect damage. Additional creases, tears, and small losses appeared within the textblock. There was minor water staining at the lower fore corner of many leaves and a pink colored stain that penetrated from the back cover through the last four leaves. Manuscript entries in black ink and a correction in blue ball-point ink had been made on two of the leaves.

TREATMENT PERFORMED: Written and photographic documentation was provided. The head, tail, and pages were surface cleaned where necessary. Tears were mended and folds guarded where necessary with Japanese kozo paper and wheat starch paste. A protective wrapper was constructed using buffered Bristol board. The volume was housed in a custom cloth-covered drop-spine box.
